Ascent School Shoes

Following is a glossary of features enhancing the shoe technology of Ascent footwear.

Note: generic technology names are written in lower case. Unique or copyrighted technologies are in UPPER CASE.

Air Mesh

Benefit: Ventilates and cools the foot
What is it: 3 layer interwoven textile mesh with a fibrous centre, through which air flows freely.
Where is it: On the upper (top part), normally on the vamp and middle section of the shoe, or on the lining of a leather shoe.

TPU Outsole

Benefit: Highly durable, and lighter than rubber. Resistant to fuel oil.
What is it: Thermoplastic Urethane, superheated and formed into the outsole shape with injection moulding technology.
Where is it: Outsole

Calf Leather

Benefit: Soft and pliable, becoming richer and deeper with wear, molding and adapting to your foot like no other material. Resistant to high temperatures, resistant to tearing, cracking, and peeling. It’s naturally insulating, but also breathable.
What is it: Natural full grain calf hide, tanned and dyed through with authentic techniques. This is the premium grade of leather. For an explanation of full grain leather compared with sub-quality grades, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2Q2DqCR5k0
Where is it: On the upper (top part)

Crib Midfoot Stabiliser

Benefit: Supports the arch area of the foot (midfoot), and reduces stress on the ligaments that often cause fatigue and pain.
What is it: Hard, moulded thermoplastic (TPU or Nylon) or hardened rubber.
Where is it: Midfoot region of the outsole of the shoe.

Nylon Shank

Benefit: Supports the arch area of the foot, and prevents the shoe from bending in the wrong place (in the middle of the shoe). The shoe should naturally bend across the joints in the forefoot region.
What is it: A hardened nylon piece.
Where is it: Placed internally (in the sole) in the arch area of the shoe.

Ortholite

Benefit: Cushions and protects the area directly underneath the foot. Assists in keeping the foot cool, and controlling sweat.
What is it: Open cell soft urethane foam.
Where is it: Used in insoles or directly underneath the insole (inside the shoe), and is full length from toe to heel.

POLIMAX

Benefit: Cushions and protects the area directly underneath the foot. Assists in keeping the foot cool, and controlling sweat. Anti-bacterial, controlling odor.
What is it: Open cell soft urethane foam.
Where is it: Used in insoles or directly underneath the insole (inside the shoe), and is full length from toe to heel.

Arch Support Insole (Removable)

Benefit: Arch support and pronation control. Removable, making the shoe suitable for orthotics. Also promotes airflow under the foot during activity.
What is it: EVA foam formed to cup around the heel and under the arch. Holes distributed from the forefoot and around the arch, combined with channels moulded into the bottom of the insole promote airflow.
Where is it: Inside the shoe, directly under the foot.

Perpetual Rubber

Benefit: Hardest wearing material enhancing the durability and longevity of the shoe. Excellent traction between the shoe and the ground. Non-marking.
What is it: Specially formulated vulcanized rubber.
Where is it: Outsole (on the bottom of the shoe) where it contacts the ground.

Thermoplastic Heel Counter

Benefit: Supports the ankle and holds the heel firmly in place, providing excellent stability when the foot first strikes the ground. A firm heel counter is essential for fundamental support and stability.
What is it: Rigid plastic material that is shaped to match the contours of your heel.
Where is it: Inside the upper part of the shoe, surrounding the back and sides of the heel.

Dual Density Midsole

Benefit: Restricts harmful over-pronation (foot rolling inwards and arch collapsing). On stability trainers, it also provides lateral stability (restricts ankle roll) in typical side-to-side motion dynamics in court and grass sports.
What is it: A firmer density midsole foam.
Where is it: Over-Pronation restricting dual density is on the medial part of the midsole of the shoe. Lateral support dual density extends from the medial arch, right around the heel to the lateral side of the midsole of the shoe.

BUNGEE Arch Support Insole (Removable)

Benefit: Arch support insole with increased arch support and more cushioning. Removable, and so able to be replaced with orthotics if needed.
What is it: Specially formulated BUNGEE foam formed to cup around the heel and under the arch (thicker under the arch than our normal arch support insole providing more support). Holes distributed from the forefoot and around the arch, combined with channels moulded into the bottom of the insole promote airflow.
Where is it: Inside the shoe, directly under the foot.

PU Arch Support Insole (Removable)

Benefit: Arch support insole with increased arch support and more cushioning. Longer lasting than other insole materials. Removable, and so able to be replaced with orthotics if needed.
What is it: Polyurethane sponge formed to cup around the heel and under the arch (thicker under the arch than our normal arch support insole providing more support).
Where is it: Inside the shoe, directly under the foot.

DRILEX Lining

Benefit: Wicks sweat away from the foot, and its anti-bacterial properties control odor inside the shoe.
What is it: Specially treated textile lining (patented technology by DRILEX).
Where is it: Inside the upper of the shoe. The lining is the part of the upper that is closest to the foot.

PORON Cushioning

Benefit: High shock absorption, low compression (long lasting cushioning)
What is it: Specially formulated foam material by PORON.
Where is it: Placed directly under the insole inside the shoe in high impact areas in the forefoot and the heel.

FREE FIT LACING

Benefit: Adjustability of fit around the forefoot for a perfect custom fit.
What is it: A floating eyeletstay (lacing area) construction that is not directly stitched to the vamp.
Where is it: On the upper of the shoe, in the forefoot near the first hole where the shoelaces begin.

Full Grain Leather

Benefit: Hard wearing and breathable, becoming richer and deeper with wear, molding and adapting to your foot like no other material. Resistant to high temperatures, resistant to tearing, cracking, and peeling. It’s naturally insulating, but also breathable.
What is it: Natural full grain cow hide, tanned and dyed through with authentic techniques. This is the premium grade of leather. For an explanation of full grain leather compared with sub-quality grades, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2Q2DqCR5k0
Where is it: On the upper (top part)

OUTLAST Lining

Benefit: Proactively manages heat while controlling the production of moisture before it begins. Reduces the effect of the formation of ‘hot spots’ in diabetic feet.
What is it: A textile fabric with Thermocules using phase change technology having the capacity to absorb, store and release moisture in different phases, thus controlling heat.
Where is it: Inside the upper of the shoe. The lining is the part of the upper that is closest to the foot.

PU Midsole

Benefit: Provides and excellent balance of shock absorption (cushioning) and energy return (rebound). These cushioning and rebound properties are longer lasting than other cushioning foams.
What is it: Polyurethane sponge.
Where is it: The midsole of the shoe, which is the part under the foot, between the outsole and the upper.

Heel Stabiliser (TPU)

Benefit: Additional heel stability and ‘hold’ around the base of the heel. The Scholar style has an extended heel stabilizer, providing additional medial stability for over-pronators.
What is it: A hardened thermoplastic urethane moulded wedge.
Where is it: Wraps around the base of the upper at the heel, between the upper and the midsole. The flange extends under the thermoplastic heel counter, holding it in place.

TPU Scuff Cap

Benefit: Prevents holes forming in the toe of the work boot from scuffing and exposing the safety cap. For tough work environments.
What is it: Moulded thermoplastic urethane cap over the top of the leather upper.
Where is it: Over the toe area of the upper of the boot.

INSULON

Benefit: Cushions and absorbs shock that over time causes bone and muscle trauma.
What is it: Specially formulated long lasting, soft foam material
Where is it: Typically placed within the midsole of the shoe underneath the foot, in the heel and forefoot areas.

Oil & Slip Resistant Rubber

Benefit: Oil resistant rubber (for workplaces with oil on the ground). Also slip resistant.
What is it: Specially formulated vulcanized rubber, custom shaped with a tread pattern
Where is it: On the outsole of the shoe, in the part that contacts the ground.

BUNGEE

Benefit: Provides great energy return over a long period, so that the spring stays in your step no matter how far you walk or run.
What is it: Bouncy elastic sponge material.
Where is it: Mostly used in the midsole (for a limited number of styles), or the insole.

Diabetic Friendly

Benefit: Reduces the likelihood of the formation of ulcers.
What is it: An upper construction where the lining is like a bag, with no stitching from the upper surface penetrating through the lining.
Where is it: In the upper of the shoe, particularly surrounding the forefoot where the foot flexes and tends to rub against the side of the shoe.

FUSION AGLET

Benefit: Dramatically increases the longevity of the shoelace.
What is it: Normally the shoelace has a plastic sheath surrounding the end of it. However, this typically splits, cracks and falls off, leaving a frayed shoelace. The Fusion Aglet fuses the actual threads within the lace together, negating the likelihood of the tips fraying.
Where is it: An Aglet is the tip of the shoelace.

DOUBLE BLACK Full Grain Leather

Benefit: Have you had black shoes that have scuffed the surface and a grey colour shows through? DOUBLE BLACK leather prevents this. Surface scuffs are invisible with DOUBLE BLACK. Full grain leather is hard wearing and breathable, becoming richer and deeper with wear, molding and adapting to your foot like no other material. Resistant to high temperatures, resistant to tearing, cracking, and peeling. It’s naturally insulating, but also breathable.
What is it: Specially dyed fully black all the way through from the surface to the back of the leather. Natural full grain cow hide, tanned and dyed through with authentic techniques. This is the premium grade of leather. For an explanation of full grain leather compared with sub-quality grades, watch this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2Q2DqCR5k0
Where is it: On the upper (top part), particularly around the toe area of our black leather shoes.
